BYOD is coming in one year or less

The latest NMC Horizon Report K-12 Edition (which you can download here) predicts that Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) will be adopted in K-12 schools within a year or less. According to the report 56% of US school districts are already implementing BYOD policies (the implication being that these policies encourage the adoption of BYOD strategies!).

They go on to mention Your Own Technology Survery (on p.34) - though unfortunately without providing the URL! Clearly if you are thinking of going down a BYO of 1:1 route then you should start by finding out about your students' existing kit - and YOTS can help you do that ...

How many students have access to mobile devices?

Posted by Peter Twining on March 3, 2014 at 9:02 AM [link]

The YOTS team are presenting the initial analysis of YOTS data from English schools in 2013 during a seminar hosted by the Education Futures research cluster within the Centre for Research in Education and Educational Technology (CREET) at the Open University in Milton Keynes from 1.30 to 3.30pm on the 5th March 2014. Attendance is free and open to anyone, but places are limited - contact Sam Godfrey for more details and to register for a place.

Two of the findings are that 95% of primary pupils (Years 1-6) and 92% of secondary students (Years 7-13) reported having access to a WiFi-enabled mobile device at home.

Come along to find out what proportion of them said they would be allowed, able and willing to bring their device(s) into school on a daily basis - and lots more ...

YOTS is going global

Posted by Peter Twining on March 3, 2014 at 8:48 AM [link]

YOTS was originally developed as part of Vital (a £9.4 million DCSF/DfE funded project to help 5-19 education in England make even better use of digital technology). When Vital's funding ended in 2013 the YOTS team were awarded funding from CREET to support the development of versions of the service for the USA and Australia, and translations into French, Mandarin (Chinese), and Bangla. We are currently working on a version for Scotland.

The graphic below shows how global YOTS is becomming - at least in terms of schools signing up and using the survey.
